Edwards signs extension with Roush-Fenway Racing

Carl Edwards announced Friday at Richmond that he signed an extension with Roush-Fenway Racing. He wouldn't say how many years, only that it was multi-year.

You didn't hear much about him even looking -- his services would certainly have been high demand. But Roush seems like a good place for him. He and crew chief Bob Osborne have proved a potent combo -- and should be in the championship hunt until the bitter end this season.

Next up on the Roush front is getting a deal with Greg Biffle worked out. I'm not sure what the real story is here. One on hand, I've heard he wants to re-sign. But I've also heard that he's frustrated because he thinks Roush focuses too much attention to make sure Edwards and Matt Kenseth's cars are up to par and not enough to improve the No. 16 car.

I'm not sure what to believe, but there's really only one team I could see him jumping to and that would be RCR. Otherwise there aren't many top tier teams looking for drivers. Biffle is a good driver, but not one teams would necessarily go out of their way to make room for like they would Tony Stewart. DEI might have interest, but I don't think it fits Biffle. He wants to win now, and DEI hasn't proven to be consistent winners.

But for Roush, Edwards was the most important piece to the puzzle. He's the one they need to keep happy now and into the future.

CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Office Depot Ford Fusion

WHAT’S YOUR CONTRACT STATUS?  “I signed my contract yesterday, so I’m staying with Roush.  I looked at everything and I talked to everybody and, for me, the number one thing is looking into the future and saying, ‘Where can I win the most races and have the most success?’  I was honored at the people who I got to speak with and I just feel like for me personally this is where I want to be for the near future and we got it done.  It’s good.  I’m real happy about it.  It’s a huge relief.  It really wasn’t that painful.  Geoff Smith and I get along really well and we just pretty much sat down and he’s really easy for me to deal with.  It took us about a week-and-a-half of going back and forth with just little things and I feel like the luckiest guy in the world for the contract I got.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO NEGOTIATE THIS YOURSELF – WITHOUT AN AGENT?  “It’s really neat.  If I was dealing with someone that I didn’t trust or that I felt like I couldn’t just kind of air everything out with, then I’d probably have to have an agent, but dealing with Geoff from day one has been very easy at Roush for me, so it was really pretty simple.  Besides, I feel like I know what I need more than anyone else.  I know what I want to make me happy and this is cool.  I’m very excited about being involved with Ford, too, because from what I understand about their corporate culture right now, they’re on their way up and it’s gonna be good here so I want to be a part of that.  I want to help out.”

WHAT IS IT ABOUT ROUSH THAT’S WHAT YOU WANTED?  “There are a few things.  Robbie Reiser running the place, that’s a big deal for me.  More and more I’m understanding how important that is.  Things we’ve been doing with this car of tomorrow to make it better, I feel like it’s very efficient how everyone is working and it’s making the cars faster, and I feel like our engine program has a lot in the near future that’s gonna be great.  Plus, my pit crew, I’ve struggled since I’ve been here with changing people and having different pit crew guys, and I feel like finally with Robbie managing that I’ve got a group of guys that are going to be really good over the next three years.  I kind of know everything and where it’s headed.  We’re winning right now and I think it’s gonna be better, so that kind of made it easy for me.”

HOW MANY YEARS? “I’ll just say it’s multi-year.”

LONG-TERM?  “A week is a long time around here (laughing).  It’s a great contract.  It’s a dream contract for me and I’m really excited about it.”

Edwards signs extension with Roush-Fenway Racing

The question is who goes Biffle or McMurray?  Rousch has to be down to 4 cars by the end of next season so who goes.  I don't see Kenseth, Edwards or Regan going anywhere, so that leaves Biffle or McMurray.  Biffle I believe is pushing 40 and has just a few years left while McMurray, has been a disappointment to some is still young and has a lot of potential left.  So will Biffle stay or will he go somewhere else?

Next you need to start a rumor about whose going into the cheerios car.  Richard Childress has stated he has talked to a few driver, current cup drivers, but won't say who.  Here are three of my picks for that car.

Bobby Labonte (moving with sponsor has to be considered for the car)

Greg Biffle - Solid Driver for the car

Scott Wimmer - (been in cup, auditioning for seat right now)

David Reutimann - Surprise pick, If Mikey has to drop to 2 cars because of a UPS move then I see Mikey keeping McDonald and letting David go.

I'd be interested to see your response or a new blog for this car.

Edwards signs extension with Roush-Fenway Racing

Hey Mikeyfan,

If you believe Biffle, he has every intention of re-signing with Roush going so far as to say he's not even looking elsewhere. And I can believe that. Like I said, RCR is probably the only team that can offer him an immediate chance to win besides Roush. And even then, if he switched teams, he'd be under the gun the first five races to qualify on speed. I don't think that's a position he wants to be in because you can never account for weather.

So I'd say that unless he makes a miraculous turnaround, McMurray would be the odd man out at Roush.

As for the fourth RCR car, it was reported that he has been talking with three to four drivers.

I gotta believe that Tony Stewart is one of those drivers and is at the very top of the wish list.

According to a couple reports a few weeks ago, Labonte has already been signed, sealed and delivered so is Childress just pulling the wool over our eyes in this "search"? Labonte would bring a champion's provisional with him, but he's also getting up there in age. Might make sense for a couple of years because almost assuredly he'd be able to get the car top 35 in owner points at the very least.

Ryan Newman has been linked to RCR in the past and he'd likely be second on the wish list ahead of Labonte. Despite his Daytona 500 victory, he hasn't had the season he'd hoped for thus far. He has been with Penske for his entire nine-year Cup career, so there's some loyalty there, but a change of scenery might do him well just like it did Jeff Burton. He'd have to qualify on speed the first five races. Barring weather, that wouldn't be much of a problem for him because he's a great qualifier.

If Childress were to go a little younger that could put a driver like Reed Sorenson into the mix. Ganassi hasn't kept secret his disappointment with all his Cup teams' results this season. It's not that I think Ganassi wants to get rid of Sorenson, but if things don't turn around, he definitely could go in a different direction. I'm not quite sure where Sorenson's contract stands. He could choose to leave of his own volition and if RCR offers him a deal he should jump. Though I know they're working hard there, Ganassi Racing still has yet to show it's a top tier Cup operation.

Ragan could be a target if Roush drags his feet while trying to decide who should stay between him and McMurray. Accoding to Jayski, Ragan's contract is up at the end of the year as is sponsor AAA. So the Roush operation has a lot of work to do.

Wimmer? I don't see that happening, plus Childress said the drivers he's talking to all drive in the Cup Series. Reutimann? Yeah, that would be a surpise. His age isn't ideal and he's yet to earn a top 10 finish in his career.
