How did you become a fan of racing?

Though I grew up in central Florida, just an hour or so away from Daytona International Speedway, I sort of stumbled upon racing.

I touched on this in Tuesday's Feud of the Week feature, but the first race I recall watching was the 1987 All-Star race. I was 12.

I'm not sure exactly how or why I started watching the race. I think my dad was watching something on the living room TV that I did't care for so I went to my room to watch my little bedroom TV. Now this was before the days of 300+ cable channels. I may have had -- at best -- a choice of about 10 channels.

Now the All-Star race was probably the perfect race to stumble upon to make a fan of somebody because it's no holds barred. This particular event would go down in NASCAR's annuls as the race of Dale Earnhardt's famed "Pass in the Grass." I was amazed, it looked like so much fun, all the beating and banging. And I was awed by Earnhardt's determination.

I was hooked. Especially by the driver of that yellow and blue No. 3 car. I just had to see what he'd do next, and he rarely disappointed.

But I was pretty alone in my racing fanhood through my youth. Through middle school and high school I can't recall knowing anyone who enjoyed racing as I did. It wasn't until I landed at the sports department of the Orlando Sentinel where racing was more socially accepted. Of course, it was the sports department, so what would you expect.

To this day though, even though NASCAR has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 10 years, I don't see it as accepted by the mainstream as football, baseball and basketball. I think part of the problem is that -- at least for most of us -- it's not just something you can go out and do in your backyards.

Becoming a race fan is nearly all vicarious. Few of us will have a chance feel what it's like to drive a racecar like we can throw a football, shoot a basketball or hit a baseball.

In any case, I would like to know how you got into racing. Was it just something your family enjoyed since the time you were born? Like me, did you stumble upon a race in your youth and become hooked? Was attending a race your turning point? Just how and when did you become a fan?

I'd like to hear from you. Add your comment below.

How did you become of fan of racing?

My family has pretty much always been race fans, and the first I remember watching was the 1992 Atlanta race where Alan Kulwicki won the title. This made me a Davey Allison fan after hearing his name when he wrecked towards the end. When he died the next year, I switched to Rusty Wallace. For most of the 90s I was NASCAR first and watched open wheel races whenever I remembered they were on. Then I went through about 5 years when hometown hero Sam Hornish was in IRL where I watched open wheel first and NASCAR 2nd. Now I'm back to NASCAR. But basically I will watch anything with wheels that can be raced.

How did you become of fan of racing?

I am a sports fananic and have been all my life.  My Dad didn't like sports that much but occansionally I got a chance to watch NASCAR races on ABC's Wide World or Sports.  There I rooted for Richard, because he was the "KING" and he drove a MOPAR.  When CBS covered the Daytona 500 in '79 I was glued to the TV set and recall the wreck, the fight and Richards win.  I was in the USAF at the time and was soon transfered to North Dakota.  Well, What else is there to watch on TV in February, March and April?  So I started watching ESPN's Coverage of the races along with TNN's coverage.  Also, at that time my son was very young and loved playing with his NASCAR matchbox cars.  He would race with the racers pushing his cars around in circles while the race was going on.  He was a Big Darrell Waltrip fan, I couldn't persuade him to root for someone else.  So it came down to where on Sunday's my son and I would watch the races together.  I loved the beating and banging of the short tracks and rooting for anyone but DW and later DW and Earnhardt.  As I moved from state to state in the military NASCAR was a sport I could keep up with.

So bottom line I guess you can say my love for sports and action is what attracted me to NASCAR and made me a race fan.  Also, attending races at the local dirt tracks helped to fuel that fire too.  There is nothing like a good race.

How did you become of fan of racing?

i am 51 Brian , and got started at a early age as my father co-owned a 37 Chevy coup when i was seven years old , i remember as a kid going to short tracks around Ohio till i was 13 when he got out of it but the seeds were sown for me .i enlisted in the U.S. ARMY and while i was stationed at ft sill Okla , they had a nice dirt bullring out there called Lawton speedway which used to attend when we were not in the field . it was at that time i was pulling duty one thanksgiving day in 1985 when this guy just got back from Korea and recognized me from a factory that we used to work in back in my hometown (small world sometimes ). he was getting out soon and we started racing together in 1986 after i got out , we ran  SHADY BOWL speedway in Ohio predominately till it closed for a year in 1993 . at that time we were getting a little burnt spending all of our time after work on the car , so we called it quits . i still attend sprint car racing on a weekly basis at LIMA LAND  speedway and of course at ELDORA about twice a month .

my passion for the nascar variety has waned quite a bit the last few years . i do not like the COT  or toyota being there .my favorite driver was the late great Alan kulwicki . i have not really had one since he was killed at Bristol in a plane crash . i was at the track when that happened and will never forget it nor have i been back to a cup event since and probably will not .

How did you become a fan of racing?

I am pretty new to this sport.  My uncle and a few other family members have been in to it for years, but I have never really been intrested till I met my english teacher 3 years ago. He was a big gordon fan and had all this NASCAR stuff hanging up all around the room, so when Daytona rolled around in Feburary of 06 I decided I would watch it.  Since there was a lot of hype over Carl doing really good that season so,  I picked him as my favorite driver. When I heard that Carl does a backflip when he wins that pretty much seeled the deal. Ever since then I have watched pretty much every race and I have fell in love with the sport. Thats about it. Nice question Santos.

How did you become a fan of racing?

I started watching Nascar in 1987 when i was eight years old. I live in southern Virginia 45 minutes from Bristol, 2 hours from Martinsville, 2 hours from North Wilkesboro(wished they still raced there), and 2 and a half hours from Charlotte. So I am from the Nascar pioneer country and every one around here is pretty much die-hard Nascar fans. I pulled for Davey Allison, Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, and now Matt Kenseth, David Ragan, and Travis Kvapil. MRN was on the local radio here before it was as widespread as it is today. Every where you went people talked racing. It is not as popular today although there are still tons of fans around the area.

How did you become a fan of racing?

Thanks everyone who responded -- including those who responded to my actual message board post.

It's pretty interesting the varying ways people -- young and old -- got into the sport. I thought of another reason the sport has exploded in recent years -- the internet.

For many of us, when we got into the sport, the only news we received of the sport was during the actual race and in the race recap in the newspaper a day later. That's it. There certainly weren't 10 different programs on various TV channels dedicated to the sport. I'm sure some of you -- do I have any readers that old? -- can recall a time when races weren't even shown live on TV.  The worst I had to deal with was whether our cable comany carried TNN. (Who remembers TNN? Ah, the good old days).

But the overwhelming change is the internet. There's so much access to the sport now. One can learn and read so much -- maybe too much. Maybe we're overloaded now. But of you can't find what you're looking for when it comes to racing information, you're not looking hard enough.

How did you become a fan of racing?

I've always kind of know certain racers from the 70s -- Cale Yarbourough, Darrell Waltrip, Richard Petty, etc. but never really, really followed it.

But I started to get into the sport around 1999/2000 -- when NASCAR's popularity was really taking off. But never followed a full season, race by race. But in 2001, I told myself, this is going to be the season I really get into it. Of course, that's the year Dale Earnhardt died at Daytona.

I've been following it every since.

How did you become a fan of racing?

I'm not into racing much, but alot more than I used to. This is because my cousin, Edwardsfan99, told me to watch a race a few years ago, I did, and since then I have actually started to pay a little attention to the races. Right now, I am a Carl Edwards fan.
